Charlotte, Norah, Vivian & Helen's Chinese Lantern iExplore Learning Story

Learners: Helen, Norah, Charlotte & Vivian
Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: 25.2.16
Learning Area: iExplore - Chinese New Year
Key Competency: Using Language, Symbols and Text, Relating to Others
Learning Observed
Helen, Norah, Charlotte and Vivian chose to complete an iExplore where they could make something to show their learning. When we began this, it was near to Chinese New Year and the girls opted to use this as their topic of curiosity. They were particularly fascinated with the Chinese Lanterns.
To begin with, they needed to ask questions about how the Chinese New Year and Chinese Lanterns were connected. To do this, they focused mostly on using the 5W’s and 1H. After doing some background research, Helen, Norah, Charlotte and Vivian had to collaboratively agree on a method and set of materials that they would use. Finally, they made their lanterns according to their research and ideas, and added their own creativity too.

Next Learning Steps
  • Share this learning with another group of learners by making a presentation or video.
  • Explain their choices of colour and materials
    • e.g. why has a woollen tassel been added?

Norah, Disha & Helen - RESPECT iExplore Learning Story

Learners: Norah, Disha & Helen
Learning Coach: D. Wilkes          Date: 5.2.16
Learning Area: iExplore - Social Science
Learning Observed
In the first week of school Norah, Disha & Helen opted into an iExplore around ‘respect’ ultimately creating a product using a digital media.  One of the key purposes of this was to become more familiar with our OrmPS Learning Model. The girls embarked on some important foundational learning around respect and made connections to the Treaty of Waitangi as well.  Norah and Helen are beginning to understand that people have social, cultural, and economic roles, rights, and responsibilities and that cultural practices reflect and express people’s customs, traditions, and values.  Disha enjoyed working with a range of other learners and is beginning to understand how people make significant contributions to New Zealand’s society and that we all have rights and responsibilities.  Working with other learners, the girls began the learning adventure by unpacking the word ‘respect’  being curious around what  it means to them? why is it important? using the mini-whiteboards.  They had an opportunity to see the Treaty of Waitangi and to make the connection that it was an agreement grounded in respect.  They had some fun ideating ‘what would you have on your treaty should aliens comes to live on planet Earth?’ After that, Yuvika, Gracy and Bariyah really enjoyed thinking about how we ‘Respect self’  ‘Respect Others’ and ‘Respect Environment’ at OrmPS and came up with some fantastic contributions- particularly around respecting the environment.  They then collaborated to create a media product which they could present to the wider group and they selected Tellagami (see image below).  I was so pleased with how Norah and Helen worked as capable role models for Disha and the leadership that Norah displayed.  Ka Pai!

Next Learning Steps
  • Start an iExplore learning journey carefully using the OrmPS learning model
  • Continue to work collaboratively with learners who are not in their immediate social circle
  • Use the vocabulary and NZSL signs that learn in other learning areas
  • Grow their capabilities with other digital tools through practice eg. Pic Collage, Sock Puppets, Puppet Pals, iMovie etc.

Math by Myself

Learner: Norah     Learning Coach:  N.Denuwara         Date: Term 1
Learning Area: Math: Addition
Learning Observed, Key Competencies/ Vision Principles
This week Norah has been focusing on addition and subtraction at school. Her math task was to do Math by Myself, which is part of the math daily 3. Math by myself involves her participating in an activity that she has to do on her own. The Math by Myself  activities promote managing self and connecting with prior and current knowledge to execute the task. During this particular task, shown below, Norah was asked to use the coloured lego blocks to show the equation on each addition flashcards. She had to connect the lego using the different colours to represent one set of numbers in the equation. Norah has shown fantastic capabilities in using materials to add sums.

Next Learning Steps
Norah can use her knowledge of addition to solve word problems, which is what she will be doing next in math. Solving word problems develops skills in visualising the scenario presented in the problem for the purpose of solving the equation.

Aniq, Gary, Eknoor, Norah & Delcy's Connected Challenge Learning Story

Learners: Aniq, Gary, Eknoor, Norah & Delcy
Learning Coach: T.Dillner            Date: 5.2.16
Learning Area: iExperience - Relating to Others
Learning Observed
This term our focus is on how we can be connected citizens. To introduce this, the Learning Coaches set up a series of challenges for the learners to complete. Each challenge was worth a different amount of points and the teams had to work together to get the highest amount to win. One task was to get all team members to cross the ‘Nile River’ (the width of one netball court) using only three hoops.
Aniq, Gary, Eknoor, Delcy & Norah had to discuss ways to make this work before attempting it. They needed to think about how their words, actions, attitudes and ideas impacting the success of the team. Each learner was able to act in a collaborative way in order to achieve the joint goal of crossing the ‘river’. They were capable of devising a method to connect their strengths and remain safe from the Nile Crocodiles!

Next Learning Steps
  • Swap roles so other members of the team retrieve or replace the hoops.
  • Make a point to do some iDevelop learning with one of their team members and build this relationship.
